The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based spread. These face coverings are to protect others. Unfortunately this virus does not have a play book. An individual can look and feel fine but still be a carrier of COVID-19. Because you can be asymptomatic and spread this virus, these face covering are an added layer of protection for you and me. The N-95 respirator masks are critical supplies that should be reserved for heatlhcare professionals and other first responders. If you have a bandana or scarf, those can work just as well. There are also YouTube videos that explain how to make no-sew face coverings. Click here for YouTube instructions.

Please note: Private businesses CAN require you to wear a mask or face covering at their locations. Remember the face coverings are to protect each other.

On Saturday I sent out a message to District K residents asking for your feedback, thoughts and concerns pertaining to the upcoming city council vote pertaining to the proposed solid waste container fee. I have spent the weekend reading and responding to your messages. I wanted to share some of the messages I received with all of you, so you can see the views of others in our district. If you are interested in seeing some of the responses I received click here.

If you missed the original email, here it is:

On Wednesday, the City Council will vote to establish a fee for the lease and management of containers for garbage and recyclables for residential units; establishing an effective date. I have included the background information for your review and would like to hear your thoughts.

The proposed lease fee for garbage and recycling containers would be .57 per container for a total of $1.14 per household, per month. The $1.14 bin lease fee would be included on your monthly water bill and would become effective July 1, 2020. The proposed lease fee would support purchasing of black and green containers; replacement parts and tools; rolling stock and personnel to support deliveries and customer service in the four solid waste operations quadrants.

SWM Amended Ordinance click here.

I want to hear from residents, as I realize that many in our community are facing hardships due to COVID-19. I also want you to know the impact on the solid waste department’s operations if we do not vote to support this item. Tough decisions are being made in our individual homes as well as our local city government.

If you have questions please email me and I will try to get the answers to you as soon as possible. Thank you to the residents that have called and emailed us, both in support and opposition the proposed container lease fee. I appreciate your participation as these are not easy decisions.
