Dear District K Friends,

As we celebrate Labor Day, I want to take a moment to honor the hardworking men and women whose dedication and perseverance keep our city and our nation moving forward.

Labor Day is more than a long weekend. It is a time to reflect on the contributions of working families, small business owners, teachers, health care workers, first responders, city employees, and so many others who give their time and talent each day to strengthen our communities.

Here in District K, I see that spirit of commitment everywhere from neighbors volunteering at community events to the small businesses that fuel our local economy. Your work matters, and it makes a difference.

On this Labor Day, let us celebrate the dignity of work, the progress we have made, and the promise of an even brighter future when we continue to support one another.

Labor Day Solid Waste Collection Update

Please review the modified collection schedule below: NOTE: Monday’s recycling will be collected on your next regularly scheduled day.
  • Monday, September 1 (Labor Day):
  • No curbside collection. All SWMD offices and facilities will be closed.
  • Tuesday, September 2:
  • Monday’s garbage and tree waste will be collected. All SWMD offices and facilities will re-open. Recycling will be collected on your next regularly scheduled day.
  • Wednesday, September 3:
  • Tuesday’s garbage, recycling, yard and tree waste will be collected.
  • Thursday, September 4:
  • Normal collection schedules resume.

From Silence to Strength: A Community Conversation on Domestic Violence & Legal Rights

Join us for an important evening of awareness, healing, and empowerment as we shine a light on domestic violence in our community.

The program begins with real stories of resilience and recovery, featuring women who have faced domestic abuse and found the strength to rebuild their lives. You’ll also hear from the organizations that walk alongside survivors every step of the way:

  • Bibi Khan, CEO, An-Nisa Hope Center
  • Dr. Conte Terrell, Founder, Fresh Spirit Wellness for Women
  • Sonia Corrales, Interim CEO, Houston Area Women’s Center
  • Moderated by Judge Stuti Patel, Advisory Board Member, Daya

Following the conversation, a Legal Rights Panel will share vital insights on navigating the justice system and understanding the protections available to survivors.

This is more than an event, it’s a safe space where listening leads to strength, silence gives way to hope, and awareness sparks action.

Stimley-Blue Ridge Library Temporary Closure

The Stimley-Blue Ridge Library will be closed starting September 1 through mid-October for roof replacement work. We appreciate your patience as we make these important improvements to the facility.

During the closure, patrons are encouraged to visit Vinson Library, located just 10 minutes away at 3810 West Fuqua St., Houston, TX 77045.

For continued service, you can also explore nearby Houston Public Library locations or take advantage of digital resources anytime at www.houstonlibrary.org.

Suicide Prevention Month Proclamation & Prayer Vigil

On World Suicide Prevention Day, you’re invited to stand with us for a special Suicide Prevention Month Proclamation Dedication and Prayer Vigil. This gathering is about more than awareness, it’s about uniting for hope, healing, and mental health awareness in our community.
