As we welcome a brand-new year, I want to thank you for the strength, compassion, and pride you continue to show in District K and across the City of Houston. Each new year is a fresh start, and I’m hopeful for all we will accomplish together in 2026.

As you celebrate, please keep safety top of mind and take note of a few important reminders.

🎇 Fireworks Safety in Houston

Fireworks are not allowed within Houston city limits. This includes firecrackers, rockets, Roman candles, and aerial fireworks. Only small novelty items, such as sparklers and party poppers, are permitted.

Illegal fireworks can pose serious risks to families, pets, and first responders.

  • Call 311 for non-emergency concerns
  • Call 911 if there is an immediate danger

Let’s celebrate responsibly and look out for one another.

🗑️ Solid Waste Services Holiday Schedule

In observance of New Year’s Day (Wednesday, January 1):

  • No curbside garbage, recycling, yard waste, or bulky waste collection
  • All Solid Waste drop-off and recycling facilities will be closed

Collection services will resume on the next regularly scheduled service day, and residents should place their carts out on their normal collection day following the holiday.

As we turn the page to a new year, let’s continue building safe, connected, and caring neighborhoods. On behalf of my family and the District K team, I wish you a happy, healthy, and hopeful New Year.

In service,

Martha

A New Creative Home Opens in District K

After more than 25 years of sitting vacant, a once-abandoned shopping center is ready for a powerful new chapter.

The Edison Cultural Arts Center will officially open its doors with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., welcoming community leaders, artists, educators, and residents to celebrate a vibrant new hub for creativity, culture, and arts education in District K.

This milestone represents years of collaboration and vision to create a space dedicated to access, expression, and opportunity through the arts. Guests will enjoy guided tours, remarks from leadership, interactive presentations, culinary samples, and a first look at the center’s inaugural programming.

The Edison Cultural Arts Center After-School Arts Academy will offer year-round programming, including:

  • Performing and visual arts instruction
  • Exhibitions and performances
  • Hands-on workshops and masterclasses
  • Youth education initiatives and community events

This new center is more than a building—it’s a place where creativity lives, talent grows, and the community connects.
