Dear District K Residents,

October has been a month of progress, purpose and community pride across District K!

One of the highlights was seeing our neighborhoods come together for National Night Out. From Cambridge Village and Southwest Crossing to Westwood, Mayfair Park, 5 Corners and so many others, residents showed us what makes District K special. The laughter, fellowship and commitment to public safety were wonderful reminders that strong communities begin with neighbors who care for one another.

We’ve also seen meaningful progress in our neighborhoods. Completed curb improvements in Westbury, the resolution of drainage concerns along Valley Hills Drive and continued investments in our wastewater and electric infrastructure demonstrate the importance of listening to residents and working together to deliver results. These improvements may not always make headlines, but they make a difference in the everyday lives of our neighbors.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors, remember those we have lost and support individuals and families navigating a diagnosis. I encourage everyone to prioritize their health, stay informed about recommended screenings and check in on the people they love. Our community is stronger when we care for one another!

As we look ahead, there are more opportunities to connect with upcoming neighborhood meetings, opportunities to volunteer and clean up our homeland, health resources, educational programs and family-friendly events. I encourage you to take advantage of all that our community has to offer.

Early voting is underway now through October 30, I encourage every eligible resident to review the election information and exercise their right to participate. Bring a friend, check on a neighbor and help ensure those around you know where to find reliable voting resources.

Lastly, thank you to our civic clubs, Super Neighborhood leaders, community partners and dedicated residents who continue to invest their time and energy in making District K a wonderful place to live, work and grow.

We still have more work to do, but there is also SO much worth celebrating. I am proud of the progress we are making together, and I look forward to what we will accomplish next.

In Service,

Martha

Investing in District K: Partnership in Progress

CenterPoint Energy Strengthening the Grid in Fort Bend Houston

A stronger electric grid means a more resilient community! CenterPoint Energy is moving forward with infrastructure improvements in the Fort Bend Houston area and surrounding Southwest Houston neighborhoods as part of its Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative.

The project includes replacing 148 utility poles with stronger, storm-resilient poles designed to better withstand severe weather, reduce outages and improve power restoration times.

What residents can expect:

  • Project timeline: Approximately two months.
  • Work hours: Monday through Sunday, generally 7 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Traffic impacts: Utility crews, traffic control signs and possible lane closures.
  • Power interruptions: Advance updates if temporary outages are needed.
  • Not every street within the designated project area will be affected.

These improvements represent an important investment in strengthening our community’s infrastructure and preparing for future storms. We appreciate residents’ patience as crews complete this work.

The K Perspective: District K in Action

From Standing Water to Community Action on Valley Hills Drive

Meaningful neighborhood improvements begin with one neighbor looking out for another.

When standing water along Valley Hills Drive left longtime resident Ms. Ernie Burrell concerned about safely leaving her home, a neighbor reached out to Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum for help.

Mayor Pro Tem Castex-Tatum quickly contacted Houston Public Works, and the District K team continued following up to ensure the drainage concerns received attention.

The result? Houston Public Works has since confirmed that the drainage concern is resolved, and Ms. Burrell is happy and appreciative of the outcome!

This is what community looks like: neighbors looking out for one another, residents speaking up and City departments working together to make a difference.

Thank you to our residents and Houston Public Works for helping turn a neighborhood concern into a positive outcome!

Curb Improvements Completed in Westbury

Good news for Westbury residents!

Curb improvements along Willowbend Boulevard have been completed following concerns raised by the Westbury Civic Club about recent roadway resurfacing.

Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum and the District K team

worked closely with Houston Public Works

to address residents’ concerns regarding curb elevations, roadway conditions and communication during construction.

Following additional work and coordination, Houston Public Works confirmed the curb improvements were completed, with the Westbury Civic Club expressing satisfaction with the finished results.

Thank you to the Westbury community for speaking up and staying engaged.

Your feedback helps us identify concerns, strengthen communication and deliver improvements that matter to our neighborhoods.

City of Houston Proposes No Property Tax Rate Increase for 2026

The City of Houston Finance Department presented its

proposed 2026 property tax rate to City Council on October 14, outlining the City’s financial projections for the upcoming fiscal year.

The proposed rate of $0.51919 per $100 of taxable property value

would remain unchanged from the previous year and continues Houston’s trend of maintaining a lower municipal property tax rate than other major Texas cities.

While the proposed rate would remain the same, the City projects approximately $62.7 million less in property tax revenue than originally budgeted, highlighting the importance of responsible financial planning and maintaining essential City services.

Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum and the office of District K are committed to keeping District K residents informed about decisions affecting City finances, neighborhood investments

and the services our communities rely on.

Keeping District K Clean: Illegal Dumping Enforcement

District K continues working with our City partners to address

illegal dumping and protect our neighborhoods.

Recent enforcement efforts on Court Road resulted in an individual being taken into custody in connection with illegal dumping activity—a reminder that

dumping is not only harmful to our communities, but can also carry serious consequences.

Our message is simple:

District K is committed to cleaner, safer neighborhoods, and we will continue working with residents and our partners to identify problem areas, address illegal dumping, and hold violators accountable.

See illegal dumping? Report it to 311

so the appropriate City department can investigate and respond.
